The story of Akshi is a simple and straight one. Akshi is an exquisite and much developed village very near to Alibaug. A quaint Konkan village with a lovely shoreline is Akshi’s hallmark. Blessed with our own small farmhouse in Akshi it was but natural that our Trust, Saaraakassh, contributes in some way in the growth and further improvement of our own dear village. As ‘Enabling Education’ is any ways one of the key focus areas of the Trust, we decided that the best way to give a helping hand would be to work with the Zilla Parishad school children.
Thus we started by the distribution of stationery and drawing kits to the children at the hands of the Sarpanch of our village himself. This was followed by a brief session on ‘Confidence and Leadership Building’ with the children from 3rd to 7th grade so as to help them build the lifeskills required to face the world at large. A formal discussion was held with the head mistress and teachers as to what else the Trust could do to contribute to the betterment of the students. In the discussion that followed it came forth that the students need exposure to interesting books apart from their usual academic textbooks so that they feel motivated towards reading and thus are able to build their vocabulary and comprehension of material read. Hence the next step that Saaraakassh took was to set up a Marathi Library for the school by donating Marathi story books. The students were also explained that they should read stories everyday and that the older students could take a story class with the younger ones thus making the reading session an interesting and fun activity.
Saaraakassh aspires to do much more and not just stop here in its beloved Akshi...
